It provides the “glue” between a print spooler like CUPS or lpr and your actual printer, by telling your computer how to process files sent to the printer.
The foomatic-rip filter does not use the “cups” ghostscript device. This means that you need to have the “cdj” device compiled into ghostscript if you want to use the cdj PPD. Finally you need to add a filtering printer that uses the new PPD, as explained in this howto.

A newer method is to have a common foomaticc device call an external program also called a filter; distinct from CUPS filterswhich controls the printer options for the different models supported by the filter. I had to change some of the driver settings this is done through the “Configure Printer” option on the printers page in the CUPS web interface before I was able to successfully print a test page.
But if foomatic-rip “knows” about the available printer, it will translate the PostScript data directly to the printer’s language, without creating the intermediate raster file.
